An Introduction to English - Part 3

An Introduction to English - Part 3There are three types of language theory and that is first, second and third course; grammar, syntax and composition. Grammar refers to how you build sentences, syntactics to how you structure those sentences. Composition on the other hand refers to what you put before, between and after your main ideas.I've said it before, the English language is an amalgamation of three languages and its the way we speak. We've always been one country, speaking three languages but now we are a multi-cultural society where each language represents a branch of human thought. This is why there is much to be learned in understanding how the English language works. Without understanding this, communication has its limits. So, what is English? It's the language we speak that everyone talks and listens to all the time. It is a very rich language with many vocabulary words and pronunciations that have come from other languages like French, Spanish, Italian, German and many more. English, as a language, is a foreign language. It is the world's largest oral language and is spoken in more than 200 countries around the world. Now of course English has many dialects and this can be confusing especially when you think about the French, Spanish and Italian speakers who have the privilege of knowing their English in a broader sense. To put it simply, English is a language that's been evolved over many centuries by many different cultures to mean whatever they wanted it to mean. For example, we might think of English as a democratic and modern language, while others may have a slightly older or medieval interpretation. It has been said that people usually don't appreciate the breadth of the English language because it's constantly evolving, it's the language of newspapers, radio and television, films and a multitude of marketing tools. The language has expanded in the use of grammar terms, colloquialisms and even slang words. So you can say you know the English language but without a working knowledge of grammar it's impossible to truly speak and write the language. You'll be amazed at how there are several different variations of the English language based on where you live. You'll also notice that the language tends to change from country to country and across the world. English is also used in the United States of America, a country where English is the most commonly spoken language in many languages, a country where many immigrants find the need to learn English, a country where, for example, an immigrant from California who speaks English as his first language will find it difficult to get by in a country where he speaks English as his second language.English is an important and powerful language, which is why it's so vital to learn it. However you may be surprised to know that a higher education in the language isn't just about getting jobs, being hired, dealing with people and writing papers, but it's also about being able to commun icate well in the workplace. This is very important as many companies are seeking highly educated employees, the same type of person that would normally struggle to understand English, so you need to be able to communicate easily in English.
